中国首次在《科学》上发表的医学论文
《科学》（Science）是美国科学促进会(AAAS)出版的一份学术期刊，为全世界最权威的学术期刊之一。1942年，北平协和医学院内分泌科医生刘士豪，朱宪彝在 《科学》 杂志上发表了第一篇来自中国医学界的学术论文: 二氢速甾醇(A.T. 10)和铁对肾性骨营养不良的治疗 (Lieu S H, Chu H I. Treatment of renal osteodystrophy with dihydrotachysterol (A.T.10) and iron. Science, 1942, 95: 388–389.). 刘士豪，朱宪彝分别在1925年和1930年毕业于北平协和医学院，他们是最早受到现代医学系统训练的中国人之一，并在美国做过博士后研究。1934年至1942年期间，他们在协和医院开展了对佝偻病、软骨病及其他代谢性骨病的研究，发表了十多篇学术论文，在 《科学》 杂志上的这篇文章以及一九四三年在巴尔的摩《医学》杂志的另一篇论文《钙磷代谢研究对肾性骨营养不良发病机理的意义及AT10和铁剂的治疗作用》，提出了肾脏可以激活维生素D假设，这一假设20多年以后被美国教授Deluca证实。在研究中，他们首次提出了 "肾性骨营养不良"概念，这个名词现在依然在医学界普遍应用。这两篇论文被推崇为代谢性骨病研究之奠基石，也奠定了他们是世界钙磷代谢之父的地位。
由于日本侵略和战乱，及1949年后连续不断的政治运动，在"知识越多越反动"的环境中，使他们无法再进行他们的研究，这是医学界的一大憾事。刘和朱分别病逝于1974和1984年。尊重知识是人类的共性，几十年过去，医学界并没有遗忘他们。改革开放以后，好几位世界骨代谢专家专程访问了当时已是天津医学院院长的朱宪彝，包括加拿大教授Jaworski和我在底特律工作时的老板Parfitt. Parfitt于1980年代初，在当时中国医学科学院院长吴阶平的帮助下，成功的访问了中国。他专程去了刘，朱在协和医院当年实验的病房和配餐室，并去天津拜访了朱，进行了学术交流。1984年当朱宪彝病逝，Parfitt还在专业杂志上撰文悼念，他说朱的去世标志着代谢性骨病理论发展的一个重要历史时期的终结。
20年前，我在Parfitt实验室工作时，阅读了刘，朱的论文，了解到他们的研究。 从现在看来，当时进行研究时，仪器简陋，条件艰苦。但他们靠精心的设计、精细的测量、精确的计算、精密的推理，获得了医学理论上的创新和突破，让人由衷的钦佩。我当时想如果没有战乱或1949年后的政治动荡，如果他们有安定的环境继续研究，他们会不会有更大的突破，甚至问鼎诺贝尔医学奖，回答应该是肯定的。只是人生没有如果，人生只有太多遗憾。这种遗憾不仅仅是他们个人的，也是民族和全人类的。
